Antonio Gregorio da Conceicao and Raaimundo Filho de Aquino, two landless rural workers from the community of Comboio in Maranhao, were killed on July 10, 2003 by armed militia, reports the National Confederation of Agricultural Workers (CONTAG). Government agencies fear that the incidences of invasions, and subsequent violent conflict, will only continue to increase. The prevalence of these invasions call into question the effectiveness of the Lula government’s agrarian reforms.
