President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva has given Indigenous Territory status to the Jacamim, Wai-Wai, and Murira Indigenous Territories in Roraima, the Badjoukore IT in Para, and the Cuiu-Cuiu IT in Amazonas. Totaling approximately 863,064 hectares, these territories are home to the Napixana, Wai Wai, Kayapo, and Miranha Indians. Since being in office Lula has recognized 24 ITs, encompassing a total area of 1,170,025 hectares. The push for recognition of these territories has come largely from a campaign started by a number of indigenous organizations, including the Confederation of the Indigenous Organisations of Brazilian Amazonia, the Federation of Indigenous Organisations of the Negro River and the Wara Indigenous Institute. The only IT left on the campaigners’ wish list is the Raposa Serra do Sol, an area long considered for official IT status.
