BOLIVIA: Grassroots organizations to field candidates for the first time

Electoral changes will allow indigenous and civic organizations to nominate their own candidates in Bolivia's December 5 elections. More than 3,500 mayoral and town councilor seats in all of Bolivia's 327 municipalities are up for election. The changes make it possible for leaders backed by organizations to run for office. Previously, only those presented by political parties were eligible. Over 70 civic and indigenous groups will be eligible to submit candidates.
