BANGLADESH: Rohingya asylum seekers fear deportation to Burma

More than 4,000 people from Burma's Rohingya ethnic group have been evicted from land in Bangladesh and now fear deportation. The Rohingya left their indigenous homeland in the Arakan State of Burma to escape persecution and forced labor at the hands of the Burmese military. In November Bangladesh authorities began evicting illegal Rohingya asylum seekers, forcing them to set up temporary shelters, where they live without clean water or adequate food supplies. Many Rohingya fear that the Burmese government will persecute and even kill them if they are forced to move back to Burma. The Asian Forum of Human Rights and Development (Forum-Asia) is urging the Bangladesh Government and the United Nations Refugee agency to intervene and abide by international humanitarian principals, which would ensure that the Rohingya are not deported.
