AUSTRALIA: Tuckey accused of racist remarks

Wilson Tuckey, a federal government minister, denies his remarks that Aboriginal culture prevents aboriginals from managing public money well as racist, claiming that he merely meant that traditional hunter-gatherer culture is incompatible with modern Australian economics. Tuckey’s statement perpetuates many stereotypes that Aboriginals are fighting to abolish: that aboriginals are unable handle their own money without government assistance and that they all live a romanticized traditional lifestyle.
