In an outdoor ceremony on June 29, Chief Justice Michael Black granted Aboriginal title and land rights to the Ngaanyatjarra, an Aboriginal tribe living throughout the deserts of Western Australia. A result of a 25-year battle for the Ngaanyatjarra, the territory that covers about 73,000 square miles of land is the biggest indigenous land reclaimation in Australia's history, as reported by the London Telegraph.
The Ngaanytjarra now have access to sacred sites without hindrance from government agencies, farmers or mining companies. They also have the right to hunt and use natural resources found on the ochre rich land.
