AUSTRALIA: Conflict over a destroyed Aboriginal Tent Embassy

The Aboriginal Tent Embassy in Canberra was destroyed by fire on June 14, the result of a suspected arson. The new debate that has emerged over the destruction is whether to rebuild or remove the Tent Embassy from the site. The Federal Territories Minister, Wilson Tuckey, wants the Embassy removed, claiming that the camping arrangement is unsanitary, illegal, and angering the community. The Aboriginal Tent Elders, however, want to rebuild. They feel that the authorities should be concentrating on finding the perpetrators of the crime and protecting the Tent residents, rather than plotting to remove them from the area.
