AFGHANISTAN: Kuchis face obstacles to nomadic lifestyle

Tensions are on the rise between settled farmers and the nomadic Kuchi peoples of Afghanistan, according to the Institute for War and Peace Reporting. Many Kuchis have attempted in recent weeks to move their herds from the eastern part of the country to traditional summer pastures in central Afghanistan. But they are encountering stiff resistance and violent reactions from farmers who accuse the Kuchis of grazing their animals on crops, and of befriending the Taliban. Dozens of Kuchis have been killed in attacks this month, and tribal leaders have traveled to Kabul to request help from the central government.
