UNITED STATES: Alaska Natives affirm global warming for Senators

After visiting Alaska Native communities, Senators John McCain of Arizona, Hillary Clinton of New York, Susan Collins of Maine, and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, have been persuaded of the existence of global warming. "We are convinced that the overwhelming scientific evidence indicated that climate change is taking place and human activities play a very large role," McCain said, according to the Seattle Times. The senators traveled to Barrow, Alaska, to speak with residents about the way global warming affects their communities. They also spoke with indigenous residents of Canada who are dealing with the threat of invasive species as the climate warms.

"If you can go to the Native people and listen to their stories and walk away with any doubt that something's going on, I just think you're not listening," Graham told the Seattle Times. Senator McCain is currently working with Senator Joe Lieberman of Connecticut on legislation to curtail greenhouse emissions.
