NIGER: Journalist and Tuareg advocate arrested

Maman Abou, Editor in Chief for the Nigerian newspaper “Le Républicain,” was arrested on November 5 for publishing confidential finance ministry documents. Abou wrote an article accusing the finance minister of embezzling French loans to Niger intended for public sector use and called for improved accounting measures. Abou has been a fierce advocate for the Tuareg minority of Niger, who view his arrest with great concern.
