A pledge made by members of the EZLN (Zapatistas) on August 9 to open up the territory of Chiapas may be the beginning of peace talks between the indigenous rebels and the Mexican government. Zapatistas have vowed to withdraw troops from roadblocks around the state and to stop charging travelers to pass through Zapatista territory.
