A new indigenous council has been formed to represent all small indigenous groups of the Chukchi Peninsula. The government of the Chukchi Autonomous Area will rely on the council to help secure the rights of the region’s indigenous peoples, and their equal representation in managing public affairs, preservation and development of culture and language, among other issues. The peninsula is home to many peoples, including Chukchis, Inuit, Dolgans, Chuvans and others, numbering approximately 18,000.
