The High Court has upheld an Environment Court decision to allow the construction of a prison in Ngawha. Maori protesters, some of whom were arrested on June 4, object to the prison because it is to be constructed alongside geothermal springs known for their curative properties and which play a role in local Maori history. The construction is scheduled for completion in 2004.
