A draft framework agreement for a semi-autonomous government in Nunavik, negotiated by the Makivik Corporation, the government of Quebec, and the Canadian federal government, is meeting with mixed responses from Nunavimmiut, the residents of the territory. A final draft was given to the Kativik Regional Council, one of several organizations that form the Nunavik Party. The Nunavik Party, represented by Makivik, is empowered to negotiate for limited self-government in northern Quebec, a region called Nunavik. However, the Council had concerns over the limits of the proposed government’s powers and decided to delay a decision. Meanwhile, another Nunavik Party organization, the local school board, has filed a suit against Makivik, alleging that the negotiations are legally invalid.
