Eusebio Macario, one of the founding members of the indigenous rights organization Ethnic Communities Runujel Junam (CERJ), has been fatally shot near his home in the village of Chulumal, Chichicastenango. Amensty International fears the attack may be a response to CERJ’s work on behalf of victims of Guatemala’s civil war in the 1980s.
