GREENLAND: Denmark, Greenland to reach agreement over upgrade of U.S. military base

The Thule U.S. Air Force Base in Greenland may soon be upgraded as part of the American National Missile Defense plan. Hingitaq 53, an organization representing those who were forced off their land by the Thule base, has demanded a settlement of their compensation claims before the upgrade. The Greenland Home Rule government is also working to increase autonomy from Denmark, which still controls Greenland’s foreign and defense policy. In addition, Greenland politicians hope to force the U.S. to clean up more than 50 contaminated sites as part of the agreement, which is expected soon.
