BRAZIL: New chief of Brazil’s Indian Agency promises major land redistribution

On September 9th the new head of Brazil’s Indian Agency, Mercio Pereira Gomes, began work on transferring approximately 12 percent of Brazilian national territory to indigenous people. The news has been welcomed by indigenous activists who have been waiting months for President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva to fulfill promises he made before his election.
