CANADA: Aboriginal rights celebrated in historic land deal

Prime Minister Jean Chretien signed an agreement today with the Dogrib tribe (the Tli Cho First Nation) that granted them 15,000 square miles of Canada’s northern Arctic region. In this monumental settlement, the tribe was granted self-rule and control over the area’s hunting, fishing and industrial development, in addition to collection of resource royalties from two diamond mines. Having ownership over the resource-rich land, the Dogrib could become one of the richest First Nation groups in North America.
