INDIA: Santhal tribal fishermen forced to relocate

On March 31 thousands of Santhal fishermen and their families will face eviction from Jambudwip Island in the Bay of Bengal. The Bengali Supreme Court, together with the West Bengal Government and the West Bengal Forest Department, are planning to evict the indigenous communities ostensibly in order to protect the biodiversity of the island, which has been declared as reserved forest. The fate of the Santhal communities is uncertain as they pack their belongings to leave the island, which has been their home since 1955.
