Freedom of expression is an inherent right for everyone, free from censorship or prior authorization—principles enshrined in both international and Inter-American human rights systems. However, for the Indigenous Peoples in Guatemala, this right has historically been subject to constant violation, alongside the denial of other fundamental rights.

For centuries, the Crimean Tatars have lived on the Black Sea peninsula of Crimea, where their language, traditions, and history are closely tied to the land.
But since Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014, many Crimean Tatars have been forced into exile or now live under occupation. Their situation raises a question that Europe still struggles to answer: what does it mean for an Indigenous People to defend identity, continuity, and political belonging when access to their homeland is disrupted by occupation and war?

A community media project in the Paarl Valley has sparked renewed interest in Khoikhoi heritage, identity, and oral history among local communities tracing their roots to the region’s first people. The initiative, called Sida Dommi (Our Voice/Ons Stem), was led by local station Radio KC with support from Cultural Survival’s Indigenous Community Media Fund.

In the Philippines, Indigenous Peoples continue to face land dispossession, militarization, environmental destruction, disinformation, and systemic marginalization. Amid these challenges, media has become an important tool for asserting Indigenous Peoples’ rights and ensuring that their stories are told and echoed.

Russian human rights defender, Indigenous rights activist and environmental advocate Daria Egereva has been nominated for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. Her nomination was submitted in January by former UN Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples S. James Anaya and Øyvind Ravna, Professor at UiT — The Arctic University of Norway in Tromsø.
September 5 marks the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Women and Girls, honoring the strength, leadership, and resistance of Indigenous women across generations.
The date commemorates Aymara warrior Bartolina Sisa, who, alongside Túpac Katari, helped lead the Aymara-Quechua resistance against Spanish colonial exploitation in 1780.
