U.S. Department of Education and Senate to Host Native Language Summit

Cultural Survival will participate in the 4th annual National Native Language Revitalization Summit in Washington, D.C. July 13-14 organized by the National Alliance to Save Native Languages.  Sponsored by the National Congress of American Indians, the National Indian Education Association, and the National Indian Gaming Association, the event will include a keynote address by a newly appointed member of the Commission on U.S. Presidential Scholars, Colin Kippen.

Kippen serves as executive director of the Native Hawaiian Education Council, and will deliver an address titled "Culture and language based education in an era of high stakes testing." Day two of the summit will be conducted on Capitol Hill, and attendees will visit key appropriators to ask for $10 million in additional FY2011 federal support for Native language programs and immersion schools.
