Campaign Update – Cambodia: New Concessions “Could Mean Game Over for Prey Lang”

We have just learned that the Cambodian Government has granted four more landconcessions in the core area of the Prey Lang forest. If these go ahead, it could mean“game over” for the forest, say Kuy community members who are struggling hard to protect the forest.

Conflict continues as hundreds of Prey Lang-area villagers and activists patrol the forest to protect against illegal logging.  The Phnom Penn Post reported that about 500 villagers rode some 250 motorbikes into the Prey Lang forest over the weekend to investigate illegal logging that they say authorities are doing nothing to prevent.

Villagers from four provinces surrounding Prey Lang – Kratie, Stung Treng, Kampong Thom and Preah Vihear – have vowed to continue the motorbike patrols in coming days and to block a road used by rubber company CRCK if authorities don’t take action to stop the illegal logging, reported the Post.
