AUSTRALIA: Jabiluka mining halted

The mining corporation Rio Tinto has decided to sign an agreement with the Mirrar people to halt plans to develop the Jabiluka uranium mine. The agreement will also prevent any future development without the express permission of the Aboriginal owners. The site in question is surrounded by Kakadu National Park, which is jointly managed by the indigenous people and Environment Australia, a Commonwealth organization.
