In January of 2011, at the request of Mexico’s Huichol (Wixärika) people, Global Response initiated a campaign to stop a Canadian company from building a silver mine in their sacred Wirikuta Natural and Cultural Reserve.
Support for protecting Wirikuta has been growing fast. The latest good news is that Senator Francisco Javier Castellón Fonseca, of the Parliamentary Group of the Revolutionary Democratic Party (PRD), is calling on the Mexican Senate to withdraw the 22 mining concessions granted to First Majestic Silver for exploration and exploitation within Wirikuta. The senator’s proposed Point of Agreement also seeks permanent protection for Wirikuta and guarantees the Huichol people’s right to free, prior, and informed consent for any project that would affect this sacred site.
The Huichol people are asking international citizens to write to key senators, urging them to support the Point of Agreement.
The Frente en Denfensa de Wirikuta (Wirikuta Defense Front) is hosting a website from which emails can be sent to the senators in Spanish or English. Please visit this site and send your letter today.
Thank you. Gracias. Pamparius.
