More than 150 writers and artists from 30 different countries joined together to sign a petition against the First Majestic Silver mine proposedwithin the Wirikuta Natural and Cultural Reserve, reported the Associated Press last week. The petition was led by Mexican writers and environmentalists Homero and Betty Aridjis, and is directed to Mexican president Felipe Calderón, urging him to cancel the concessions made to the Canadian company on sacred lands of the Huichol (Wixárika) people. The list of signees include Nobel literature laureates Tomas Transtromer of Sweden and Jean-Marie Le Clezio of France, Canadian writer Margaret Atwood, US poet laureate Robert Hass, among others.
See our action alert on this issue, and you too can write a letter to President Calderón, asking for the cancelation of these concessions.
