Update on Kenya Crisis

Date: 03/27/2009

Cultural Survival has just received this note from a Samburu resident of Archer's Post, Kenya, who is writing about the attacks by police and military in his region (see the news story elsewhere in the Cultural Survival news section). Acute military attacks have stopped for now, but the police still have a heavy presence in the area, and the people still have no cattle and no other food source. And, as the note suggests, the police continue to abuse villagers. Here is the note from Benson Lelukai, of Archer's Post:

"Widows and young  children who are innocent and don't know what a raid is have lost  their only way of living. There is tension in Archers Post; everything is parallelized, business is in  a horrible situation, there is no more learning in the few schools in the area, and people have moved near the  town, hence congestion. The community at large is experiencing  notable sufferings, and the camp in Archers Post police station is another stress to locals. After day-time operation, not less than five women are raped every night. Hunger increases every morning. Samburu people have lost hope in this government after their only way of living, their children's fees, and their pride is driven to Borana and Meru people in Isiolo District. With these harrassments, Are we really Kenyans?"
