New Online Video Network Promotes Chickasaw History and Culture

By Chelsey McKnight and Tiffany Poole

The Chickasaw Nation’s online video network, Chickasaw.tv, has been relaunched in a new, vibrant and dynamic platform. Chickasaw.tv is a high-definition, video-rich network created to increase awareness of the culture, legacy and continuing contributions of the Chickasaw people. The interactive, high-quality content is now available on all devices with enhanced functionality and a user-friendly experience. Chickasaw.tv is the first online video network of its kind by a Native American tribe, but this groundbreaking new resource is not just for Chickasaws—it is for anyone who would like to become better acquainted with the storied history and thriving culture of the Chickasaw Nation.

Hundreds of interviews with tribal officials, historians, artists and elders were conducted to create the 5 channels and over 1,500 videos of in-depth profiles and stories available at www.chickasaw.tv. Interviewees include many notable Chickasaws such as U.S. Rep. Tom Cole and NASA astronaut John Herrington. Tribal historians and anthropologists complete the picture by bringing to life the Chickasaw spirit of determination and ability to overcome hardship.

The new Chickasaw.tv features a beautifully designed and informational History & Culture channel. This one-of-a-kind educational tool brings to life the ancestors and historical events that shaped the Chickasaws’ past as well as the people who are dedicating their lives to preserving the Chickasaw cultural legacy for future generations.

The journey into the Chickasaw Nation’s past begins with the history timeline, which spans from the tribe’s roots in prehistory to its present-day existence and vividly documents the life and times of the Chickasaw people. Beginning with the Chickasaw Migration Story, the history timeline presents Chickasaw history in an engaging and illuminating way. From the early days of European discovery to the dark periods of settler encroachment, the Chickasaws emerged a stronger nation, one that would once again gain sovereignty in later years.

The History & Culture channel also includes in-depth profiles of historic figures and influential Chickasaws who helped move the tribe from its ancient roots to its impressive achievements of today, such as the revered Chief Tishomingo. The men and women who were instrumental in American history are featured as Native Patriots. These Chickasaw leaders were crucial to forming the United States and maintaining our young nation, such as Piomingo and his heroic efforts in support of George Washington. Some were warriors, others pacifists—but the pivotal role they played in both sustaining the Chickasaw tribe and impacting American history is honored with dramatic video reenactments and enlightening biographies and solidifies them as heroes of the nation.

Next, discover what it means to be a Chickasaw Culture Keeper. These curators of Chickasaw culture dedicate their lives to preserving their people’s cultural legacy and living traditions, such as the Chickasaw language and traditional Chickasaw dance and music. Nineteenth century storyteller and Chickasaw Hall of Fame inductee Te Ata Fisher is just one of the many Culture Keepers highlighted with interesting videos and information biographies.

Experience the sites that define the Chickasaw Nation and immerse yourself in the ancient attractions that characterize the cultural landscape of the Chickasaw people. Stunning HD videos and breathtaking aerial footage will transport you to the most significant locales and landmarks in Chickasaw history. Chickasaw.tv offers a one-of-a-kind tour through the diverse landscapes and locations that define the Chickasaw people—from the Blackland Prairie and the Homelands of the Chickasaws’ ancestral settlements in the southeast United States to today’s Chickasaw Nation headquarters and properties, such as the Chickasaw Cultural Center, in south-central Oklahoma.

Under the visionary leadership of Governor Bill Anoatubby of the Chickasaw Nation, Chickasaw.tv was first launched in 2010 to emphasize the history and continuing contributions of the Chickasaw people.

“While the Chickasaw Nation is headquartered in Oklahoma, our citizens are scattered across the U.S. and around the world,” said Governor Anoatubby. “Our intention with Chickasaw.tv was to create a repository—a digital Smithsonian, if you will—to document our culture, legacy and traditions for future generations. It will allow Chickasaws, no matter where they live, to connect with our rich history, experience the pride that comes from being Chickasaw and discover the opportunities available to them through our programs and services. Beyond that, we hope that Chickasaw.tv will help the general public become better acquainted with the long and storied history of our nation.”

In addition to the History & Culture channel, the new Chickasaw.tv features programming about the Arts & Humanities, Health & Wellness and the innovation and progress of the Chickasaw Nation as it forges ahead in this age of creative renaissance. Chickasaw.tv’s deep well of news and video-rich content is constantly updated with fascinating stories and profiles that will awaken within you a deep and abiding appreciation of a people dedicated to preserving their land, language and unique identity.
